The Kedarkantha Peak Trek is one of the most sought after snow trekking destinations in India. Juda Ka Talab, the first campsite, is the picturesque campsite located at an altitude of 9,000 feet. Juda Ka Talab captivates with a beauty so serene that you blink twice to feel if the place really exists. A thicket of mighty oak and tall pine trees with colossal mountains in the background surrounds the glacial lake imparting the look of a protective shield. Juda Ka Talab weather ranges from -12 to -1 in winter months, 3 to 12 degrees in spring and summer months and -8 to 12 degrees in the fall season.

From Juda ka Talab you trek around 4 km through pine and oak trees to reach the open highlands just below the Kedarkantha summit. Just as the forest ends, you reach a wide meadow which is Kedarkantha base camp. Located at an elevation of 11,250 feet, Kedarkantha base camp is the second campsite in the Kedarkantha trekking trail.

Trek starts from Sankri – sour Village which cultures & lifestyles are traditional around of Sour – Sankri which is in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary national park. Sour village is quite beautiful with snow covered mountains and the sparkling tons river flowing through it. If you visit it once, then no doubt you will definitely visit here again. In sour village there are various conventions, fairs , and rituals. the people of the village wear traditional costumes and cook traditional food. The temperature here drops to 10 degrees at night and even less but remember such kind of temperature is bearable only with a bit of carefulness. Kedarkantha Trek Length
*The Kedarkantha trek length is 20 Kms which is covered in the span of 6 days. Kedarkantha Trek is a moderate to difficult grade trek which can be done by beginners or the first-timers also if they have the basic fitness level. The trek from Sankri to Juda ka Talab is of approx 4km from there another 4km trek to the Kedarkantha base camp. The next day you will be trekking 6km in total from basecamp to summit and summit to Hargaon. On your return to Sankri, you will be trekking to a length of 6km from Hargaon.

Kedarkantha Trek Best Time
Kedarkantha is an all-season trek that captivates you with a distinct beauty in each season. Spring and summer boast of clear skies and fresh landscapes that treat your senses with the fragrance of blooming flowers. The fall season offers a unique experience; trekking on the trail bedecked with dried multi-hued leaves is an amazing experience.

However, winter is still considered the best time to visit KEDARKANTHA Peck Trek. The snowy trails lined with tall snow-drifted trees, frozen mountain lakes incandescent in the moonlight and snowy peaks glittering at dawn and dusk in amazing hues of golden and red;

Kedarkantha Summit
The trek is famous for its summit and is rightly so. First is that, this is a proper summit marked by cairn. Of all the 12,500 ft treks in the Himalayas, Kedarkantha is one of the two summit treks. The rest are all mostly passes or high points on a range.
This itself is special. Second, is the route to the summit. As soon as you clear the tree line, the summit is right in front of you. So, right from the beginning of the trek, you know where you are trekking to and it creates an instant aspiration. This builds the challenge of the trek right from the beginning of the summit day.

Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri

● Altitude – 1950 m/6400 ft.
● Drive – 200 km.
● Departure from Dehradun in the morning at 7:30 am.
● Overnight stay at Sankri.
● Travel through Kempty Fall, Mussoorie, Purola, and Mori.

Get ready for your adventurous trekking journey that starts from Dehradun early in morning, that serves to be the most beautiful city. You would be picked up from Dehradun railway station at 7:30 in morning by HET’s team member. It takes almost 8 hrs to reach Sankri from Dehradun that is 200 km away, so it is a better option to leave in the morning.
As soon as you leave Dehradun, the landscape shifts into rural setup, with the roads enriched with serene villages and dense green forests. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the drive while witnessing pine forests, snowy mountains, fields, and get ready for your coming adventure. Moreover, grab a chance to take a small halt at various scenic spots, like Kempty Falls, Purola, and Mori and enjoy the serene yet soothing atmosphere.
It would be a long yet exciting journey, as you could witness enchanting scenery, elevating your adrenaline level for trekking. During this route, you can experience various things, including wildlife. And, in the evening around 5 pm, you reach your starting destination. After reaching the destination, you could wander through the streets of Sankri and explore it.
After this long drive, spend your evening exploring the beautiful village. Explore unique wooden houses while strolling through the serene village. Immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere, as the evening sky seems to be magical

● Distance – 3-4 km.
● Travel through meadows and dense pine forests.
● Savor delicious lunch after reaching Juda Ka Talab.

Start your second day of Kedarkantha trek in its base camp – Sankri village. After having a tasty breakfast, you are ready to embark on your journey, leaving the beautiful village and making your way towards Juda Ka Talab, a place laden with forests. This trek journey seems to be easy, enabling you to completely enjoy the trekking trail.
After trekking for almost 4 hrs, you will enter a place laden with exotic wildlife that is known as high-altitude lake Juda Ka Talab. Experience the tranquility while sitting near the lake and witnessing the crystal clear water in which you could view the towering trees. Moreover, you could grab a chance to set up your tents under the open sky, offering you the chance to stargaze at night that is impossible to witness in the city.
Camping at Himalayasgriffon camping site offers you a rejuvenated mind and relaxed body. Here, you can walk peacefully along the lake and sit by water to enjoy the surroundings. But, as evening comes, the temperature starts to drop. So, it is advisable to gather around a campfire with your fellow trekkers while enjoying the best meal. In the end, the calmness of the place offers a restful sleep, thus preparing you for your upcoming trekking journey towards Kedarkantha summit.

● Distance – 3 km.
● Trekking via dense forest trails with enchanting views.
● Reach Kedarkantha base camp.

Enroute towards the most exciting journey towards Kedarkantha base camp. After savoring breakfast, you need to leave Juda Ka Talab and move ahead towards Kedarkantha base camp that is around 3 km away. Moreover, the trekking route to the base camp is moderate, and enables you to view rocky terrain along with majestic views, making your journey more exciting.
During the trail, you could explore dense forests of oak, pine, and maple trees. These tall trees create a canopy that filters sunlight and makes the floor golden in color. Moreover, traveling through this trail in winters adds a magical touch. Experience the serene atmosphere along with birds chirping that soothes your ears.
You can reach base camp till noon, which lies at an altitude of 10,100 ft. By standing at the base camp, you can clearly view Kedarkantha peak at a distance, which makes you more excited for the next day’s trek to the peak. ● Distance : 6 km (6 hrs approx).
● Trek towards Kedarkantha summit in the early morning.

● Come back to Juda Ka Talab on the same day after exploring the summit.
● Overnight stay at Juda Ka Talab camping sites.

Trekking towards Kedarkantha summit starts before dawn, as it offers you a mild climate to ascend. By trekking early in the morning, you could witness the sunrise – a sight to behold. Now, the trail gets challenging, but the soothing breeze and excitement of reaching the summit keeps you full of energy. Experience the rocky path along with open meadows as you come near to the peak.
As you ascend up the summit, you can also witness various other surrounding peaks that glow brightly. As you reach at the top after overcoming all challenges, the sense of completing the trek is memorable. Spend enough time on the summit while exploring the grandeur beauty of nature.
Now, it’s time to come down to base camp, and descend is much easier and quicker than ascent, enabling you to witness the change in nature. Once you come down to base camp, take some time to rest and capture some more moments. After that, you are required to descend to Juda Ka Talab on the same day only. ● Reaching Dehradun at night at almost 8:30 pm.

Then, pack up your bags and be ready to descend down to Sankri while witnessing the breathtaking nature. You can reach Sankri around 10:30 am and if you wish to buy any local item before leaving for Dehradun. You can reach Dehradun from Sankri almost in 8 hrs as per the traffic situation. Spend some time in the most beautiful city in case you are not returning to your home on that same day.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Kedarkantha Trek largely depends on the kind of experience you are looking for. The most popular season is from December to April, when the entire trail is covered in fresh snow. During these winter months, the forests, campsites, and summit turn into a white landscape, creating a true snow trekking experience. The cold temperatures, clear skies, and peaceful surroundings make this period ideal for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas in winter. Snow is usually at its best between late December and February, making it the peak season for this trek.

For trekkers who prefer milder weather and greener scenery, the months from April to June are also a great time to visit. During this period, the snow begins to melt, and the trail becomes vibrant with green meadows, blooming rhododendrons, and clear mountain views. The temperatures are more comfortable, which makes the trek suitable for beginners and those who are not used to extreme cold.

Another good time for the Kedarkantha Trek is from September to November, after the monsoon season. The skies remain clear, the air is fresh, and the mountain views are sharp and beautiful.
